Letter from Executive Director Dave Anderson
As the recession wears on, Safe Families is receiving more and more calls for help. In fact, we are projecting that our number of placements will double to about 600 this year compared to 2008. Why? The main reason seems to be the economy, which has been bringing a different type of family to our ministry—those facing financial distress, foreclosure or bankruptcy.

A recent front page story in the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune illustrated this point. The story was about Safe Families and focused on several clients, including Jenny Lass, 20. Things had gotten so bad for Jenny that she called a local adoption agency to see about giving up her infant son, Zachary. The agency referred her to us, and now Jenny’s son is staying with Safe Families volunteer Amanda Pinc. “I was unable to get a job because I don’t have money for day care,” Jenny says. “I don’t have money for gas.” Now Jenny, who’s living with her mom, has a chance to find a good job, save some money and create a better life for herself and Zachary. All because Safe Families was there for her in a time of crisis.

We are always looking for new Safe Families volunteers. Learn more by contacting Heyward Watford by  or call (773) 653-2255.

    Help us Meet the Match!
Safe Families has received a generous $15,000 matching grant from a local foundation! Our deadline to raise matching funds is May 1, and we’re two-thirds of the way there. Can you give toward the last $5,000? Give online or by mail: 4300 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 60641, attn: Sylvia Ortiz.

Give Creatively! (and Without Sending Money)
You can give to LYDIA from the comfort of your own home—without even writing a check!

    • Donate gently used items that you no longer want and LYDIA will list them on eBay and keep the proceeds. It’s part of our new “Goods4Good” initiative. Items should be in good condition and can include name brand, designer and vintage clothing, shoes and designer handbags; jewelry; silver; and electronics. Unsold items will be given to families and children in need. For more information or to arrange pick up, please contact Sean Durbin at (773) 794-3300 or by . You can drop off items at 4839 W. Irving Park Road (a LYDIA facility).
    • Designate LYDIA as your charity while selling items on eBay, and LYDIA will receive a percentage from your sales through an eBay program called Giving Works. Click on Giving Works from the eBay home page to learn more.
    • Register with the search engine GoodSearch.com (and designate LYDIA as your charity). Every time you use GoodSearch, LYDIA will receive a credit of about a penny. If 100 people average just two searches a day for a year, LYDIA will receive about $730.
    • Use GoodShop.com to shop online, and LYDIA will receive a percentage of the money you spend (percentages vary). Over a thousand online retailers participate, including Target, iTunes, Travelocity, Amazon and Old Navy. If 100 people purchase $500 in merchandise with an average of 3% donated to LYDIA, the estimated revenue would be $1,500.

    Visit LYDIA on Facebook!
LYDIA has a new "fan page" on Facebook, designed to help people connect with the ministry and each other in new ways. As we continue to develop the page, it will keep visitors informed about upcoming events and initiatives, provide links to media stories about LYDIA and tell them more about how LYDIA is changing lives. Find us by searching "LYDIA Home Association," and click on "Become a Fan."

projectMUSIC Hits a Real High Note
projectMUSIC was a big success! The event’s 114 guests enjoyed an inspiring concert by recording artist Angel Taylor and a performance by the Divine Inspiration Dancers (whose members live at LYDIA’s Residential Treatment Center). The event raised $27,000 to cover the cost of camp for kids who live at our Residential Treatment Center.

Many thanks to event organizers Dan and Kim Michelson for pulling everything together so beautifully...to Catered by Design for donating all of the food and catering services...to Catalyst Ranch for donating the event space on a Saturday night...to Aware/Columbia Records for Angel’s transportation and entertainment costs...and to all our volunteers and silent auction donors.

Join Us for Our May Open House
Join us for an informational Open House on Thursday, May 21, which will feature a tour, Q&A time, short testimony from an LUA student and a brief presentation by Dave Anderson. To make your reservation, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by  or (773) 653-2249.

    How Does Our Garden Grow?
“The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
    Than anywhere else on earth.”
    Dorothy Frances Gurney

Kids who live in our Residential Treatment Center are preparing for spring with an eye toward their gardens, which have become a source of inspiration, recreation, salad fixins, flowers and more! We want to extend a special thanks to Nature’s Perspective Landscaping for providing consultation services at no charge this winter. They developed exciting plans for LYDIA’s grounds and for our vegetable and flower gardens (immediate improvements call for the addition of raspberry bushes and a pumpkin patch).

Volunteers are needed to assist with soil preparation and planting in May. To help, please contact Mel Gonzales by  or (773) 653-2233.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Here at LYDIA, we're experiencing a new level of synergy between our programs and the people who make them possible. What do I mean? Well, take a look at Safe Families, which launched about six years ago with just a handful of volunteers. In 2008, 192 new Safe Families volunteers joined the movement, bringing our total to 434, and we placed 399 kids, vs. 210 placed in 2007.

There's also a new level of synergy in our fundraising efforts, thanks to creative volunteers like Dan and Kim Michelson. In 2007, they asked family and friends to sponsor Dan's participation in the New York City Marathon, and used the money to send LYDIA’s 40 Residential Treatment Center kids to camp in March 2008.

We're building off the success of the Michelsons' efforts with Team LYDIA, whose dedicated runners will participate in the Chicago 5K or Half Marathon on September 13. This group, whose motto is "Running to Learn. Learning to Run," will raise money to benefit LYDIA Urban Academy, our alternative high school. To join Team LYDIA or for more information, contact Kelcey Gropp by  or call 773-899-5381.

It's exciting to see God take these kinds of efforts and multiply them to bless the families and children we serve. That's the best kind of synergy of all!

    Thank you, Ministry Partners!
Ministry partners like you helped LYDIA end 2008 on budget, no small feat in today's tight economy. In fact, donations well exceeded our year-end $90,000 matching grant opportunity! 2009 promises to be an even busier year than last, as the need for LYDIA services continues to grow. You can help by:

    • Making a monthly gift to LYDIA via electronic funds transfer
    • Seeing whether your employer offers a corporate matching gift program
    • Donating appreciated assets
For more information, please contact Nancy Good, Development Director at 773-653-2252.

    Getting the Word Out
Introduce your friends and family to the ministry of LYDIA by bringing them to an Open House and Tour on Thursday, February 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event, a first for LYDIA, is sponsored by the Chicago Board of Directors and designed to share information about the ministry and how people can become involved as volunteers and donors. It includes a brief presentation, Q&A, and tour, as well as tasty refreshments. Additional Open House events will be held in May and September.

Save the Date for LYDIA's Benefit Gala
This year's Benefit Gala will take place earlier than usual, on November 16, and plans are already underway. We are pleased to announce that Erwin Lutzer, Senior Pastor at The Moody Church in Chicago, will serve as our featured speaker. Dr. Lutzer is an award-winning author of more than 20 books, a celebrated international conference speaker, and the featured speaker on three radio programs: The Moody Church Hour, Songs in the Night, and Running to Win.

    From the Safe Families Files
It's no exaggeration to say that Safe Families changes lives. Here are two recent examples.

"Alexandra" was struggling with drug addiction and living with her three children in a motel room. People from a church were paying her room charge and urging her to undergo substance abuse treatment. When Alexandra learned that her children could be cared for through Safe Families and that she could get them back any time she wanted, she finally agreed. Alexandra and her children were reunited soon after she successfully completed treatment.

"Michelle" is a 10-year-old autistic girl whose father, an alcoholic, checked himself into a detox and rehab program. The problem was that in his desperation to get better, he neglected to make arrangements for Michelle's care. So, when school got out that day, the school social worker took Michelle to the police station hoping for help. An officer who knew about Safe Families gave us a call. Within an hour, a Safe Families volunteer came to the police station and then cared for Michelle until her father was in a better place to care for her.

Demand for Safe Families continues to grow! For information about becoming a Safe Families volunteer, please contact Heyward Watford by  or call 773-653-2255.

    LYDIA's Goods4Good
We're looking for gently used name-brand items (e.g. Burberry, Coach, JCrew, North Face) that you might want to get rid of. Perhaps they are getting in the way in your closet or basement, or perhaps you just consider them "ok" now, but they can be used to make someone else's life better. LYDIA is starting an initiative that caters to the .com era in which we now find ourselves. The name-brand items you donate to us will be sold on eBay. Funds raised will help LYDIA provide programs and services to those we serve. Many people now use online shopping as their primary shopping source. LYDIA is using this reality as an opportunity...an opportunity to make others' lives better...your "Goods" for "Good". You can contact us for more information by  or call 773-653-2200. Let us help you with your spring cleaning. (Due to the nature of online selling, please do keep in mind that the items you donate need to be clean and name-brand clothing, accessories or jewelry.)

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Thank you to all those who were part of the 2008 LYDIA Benefit Gala! The event was a great success in terms of contributions received and number of guests (about 900). As the staff continues to process gifts, it’s becoming clear that donors gave generously. The running total brings us beyond our matching grant amount of $100,000, and gifts are still coming in.

As always, one of my favorite moments of the evening was when clients shared how God has used LYDIA in their lives to bring spiritual and emotional healing. And I really appreciated Dr. Crawford Loritts's insight about how LYDIA and ministry partners like you help "break bonds and bear burdens" by coming alongside people as they overcome the obstacles in their lives, such as domestic violence, drug use and poverty. As he said, the government can’t be the solution because these problems are moral in nature and rooted in character. The government can help, but they can’t give hope.

But LYDIA can, through the power of the gospel. As Dr. Loritts said, LYDIA has a legacy that will last into future generations; it represents a "turning around" of what the enemy wants to destroy in terms of families. Thank you for being part of that "turning around" by living out the gospel in your own lives and supporting this ministry so faithfully.

In closing, I would like to extend special thanks to our Gala Event Sponsors, Table Hosts, volunteers and those who donated items for the Silent Auction. Your partnership makes this ministry possible!

Time is Right for Year-End Gifts
The economy may be shrinking, but the need for LYDIA programs — particularly Safe Families — continues to grow. As we approach the end of the year, we are hoping that, despite difficult financial times, our donors will give generously to the ministry so that we can continue serving children and families in need. Here are some examples of how your gifts to LYDIA make a tangible difference in the lives of our clients:
    • $5,000 provides one year of tuition for a student at LYDIA Urban Academy.
    • $3,000 pays for a mother and her children to participate for one year in our Healthy Families program.
    • $1,200 covers the cost for LYDIA to serve one family through Safe Families.
    • $500 provides 10 counseling sessions for a family in crisis.
Gifts to LYDIA can take many forms. The most straightforward is a gift made through our secure web site at www.lydiahome.org/donate or by mail at 4300 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 60641.

We are also seeking donors who will support LYDIA with a donation via electronic transfer each month in the amount of their choice. We offer this option as a convenience to our donors, and also to help us anticipate our monthly donor income. It is especially helpful when we are riding out the slow giving months of January, July and August. If interested in monthly giving, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by or call (773) 653-2249.

    Something Beautiful
Those who attended the Benefit Gala were moved by Antwan Turpeau's story of how God used LYDIA and others to save his life. Here, we share the highlights of that story.

"When I was little, my mom had paranoid schizophrenia and we lived in extreme poverty, with no electricity and very little food. At certain points we were forced to live in homeless shelters or bathe at McDonald’s. When I was 10, both my younger sister and I were removed from our home and placed at LYDIA.

I lived at LYDIA for about two years, and during that time a couple of great things happened. One was that LYDIA matched me up with a mentor, whose name is Cliff. He would pick me up every other weekend to do things I'd never experienced before, like go to museums, Bulls games and Lambs Farm. He motivated me to work hard in school, be responsible, and respect other people. We're good friends to this day.

The other thing that happened was that in the fifth grade I became friends with a boy named Nick. I hit it off with his family right away, and spent a lot of time with them. I had hoped to live with them then, but before that could happen my father was granted custody of my sister and me, and we went to live with him. After a couple years, though, he became so abusive that I ran away. I was 15.

I stayed with people on the south side of Chicago and got involved in gangs and robbing freight trains. My life was out of control, but somehow I still kept in touch with Cliff and the Katz family. When I was 16, the Katzes asked me to come live with them in Park Ridge, and that was a big turning point. They embraced me just as if I had been born into their family.

Today, I am manager of the DCFS Contracts with the Chicago Area Project, and I'm working on my master's degree in social work. I got married briefly, which didn't work out, but I am a proud and invested father now, of Kennedy Ann, who is three. God has done something beautiful in the last 18 or so years of my life. He's given me a new family that includes the Katzes and Cliff, as well as wonderful friends and most importantly Kennedy Ann. I'm thankful.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
The struggling economy is taking its toll on everyone, from stock brokers to investors to millions of homeowners. There are "hidden" victims of the crisis as well — families for whom every day was already an economic challenge, who are now on the brink of eviction or perhaps already homeless. When the economy worsens, as it has been lately, these families tend to suffer more than others. But the difficulties go beyond dollars and cents, affecting their very ability to continue caring for their children. In times like these, the services LYDIA provides become more vitally important than ever.

With that in mind, we are hoping that ministry partners like you will help make the 2008 Gala Benefit one of our most successful events ever. The fundraiser is coming up on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. The evening will include stories about lives changed through LYDIA this year, opportunities to support LYDIA financially, and a talk by well-known pastor and author Dr. Crawford Loritts.

It's not too late to be a part of this year's event! You can still contribute to the success of the event by serving as a table host, event sponsor, or contributing items to the always popular silent auction. Silent auction items include: weekend get-a-ways, gift cards to popular restaurants and spas, sports memorabilia and tickets as well as many more items. To learn more about any of these opportunities, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by or call (773) 653-2249.

    So Many Ways to Give
The end of the year is fast approaching, and we hope you will remember LYDIA in your charitable giving plans. The country's economic downturn has already affected LYDIA financially. With your help, however, we believe we can still end the year with all bills paid and ready to face the ministry challenges of 2009. Please consider giving sacrificially to LYDIA at this critical time!

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees (and, sometimes, spouses and retirees). This could double or even triple your gift to LYDIA! Simply request a matching gift form from your employer, then complete it and send it to LYDIA with your gift. We will do the rest.

Does your employer have a foundation that might provide grant opportunities for LYDIA? If so, please contact Nancy Good, Development Director, by or (773) 653-2200.

Helping Kids Feel More at Home
A very special thank you to Carmen and Vikki Galante, owners of Suburban Elevator. The company paid for almost all of the Residential Treatment Center's most recent "extreme makeover" — redecorating the kids' bedrooms. Thanks also to volunteers from Accredited Staging Professionals, who paid for and executed the redecoration of the Center's common areas, selecting new rugs, pictures and other accessories. Their participation was part of Worldwide Staging Service Week, Sept. 8-15.

    Coming Full Circle
Katrina Schroeder came to LYDIA's Residential Treatment Center when she was about 12 years old. Today she is working toward a career in social service, hoping to help other "youth in care" through hard times.

When I was little, I lived with my parents and my twin brother in Chicago. But there were a lot of problems with drugs and violence in our home, and when I was about six my mom took me and my brother and moved out. We were homeless for a while, and stayed with friends or lived in shelters. Finally, DCFS stepped in. I was placed with one foster family when I was nine, then another. After a few years DCFS was asked to investigate my foster home because of safety concerns. That's when I came to LYDIA.

It was hard at first because I really missed my foster parents. But the staff at LYDIA was great. They took care of me, and they cared about me. I made a lot of friendships with other kids at LYDIA, and talked to my foster mom on the phone whenever I could. I also participated in group therapy and attended a neighborhood school. After about 18 months, I was allowed to return to my foster family, where I stayed until graduating from high school last year.

Now I attend Harold Washington College, where I'm working toward an associate's degree in art. Eventually, I'd like to get my master's in social work and become a DCFS caseworker. In the meantime, I'm serving as president of the Illinois Statewide Youth Advisory Board, an organization sponsored by DCFS that's designed to help children in the system understand their rights, explain what resources are available to them and give them a voice.

I guess you could say I have a real passion for youth in care. I know what they are going through, and I want to help them understand that people are here to help them. They are my inspiration.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
For most kids, going to school is a given. But for students enrolled at LYDIA Urban Academy, the opportunity to take classes and earn a high school diploma is nothing short of a miracle. These are kids who have been expelled from other schools or have dropped out; they have come to LUA for a second chance.

LUA teachers and staff are committed to helping them succeed. That means focusing on the three "R's," of course, but also on career development. To that end, we launched a work-study program last year, whose objective is to teach students about different career opportunities, help them develop marketable skills and allow them to pay for part of their tuition through meaningful employment.

During the school year, participating students work eight hours per week at local businesses in entry-level positions. Instead of receiving a paycheck, they assign their earnings to LUA to pay for half the cost of their tuition. This relieves the burden on student families, many of whom struggle to get by, and helps the school meet its financial obligations.

LUA students have been employed in the office setting, in shipping and receiving, as mechanics and as personal assistants, as well as in other positions. If you or someone you know would be interested in hiring an Urban Academy student as part of this program, please contact me by   or call (773) 736-1447. Together, we can make a significant impact in the lives of at-risk youth!

Work-Study Program Prepares Students for Real World
One company that has participated in the work-study program is Rothschild Investment Corporation, located in Chicago's Loop. Executive Assistant Valori Uhle, a long-time friend of LYDIA, inquired about the program last fall, and LYDIA identified Urban Academy student Delia DeJesus as a good fit.

"We hired Delia to assist me with basic secretarial tasks and the arrangement worked out very well for both us and for her," Valori says. "She proved to be very cooperative, polite and able to interact well with the staff. We kept her very busy."

Delia is finishing up her coursework at LUA and plans to attend Wright College in the fall. "I am really thankful to LUA for the work-study program," she says. "My experiences at Rothschild taught me about how to be independent and handle tasks on my own. I also learned that in the real world, everything is fast paced and everything you do or say counts. I feel better prepared for the future now."

    LUA Wish List
LYDIA Urban Academy is seeking the following items:
    • 15 school desks with chairs attached (and without under-desk storage)
    • Funding to pay for field trip transportation ($250 per trip, 10 per year)

To learn more or help out, contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by  or call (773) 653-2249.

    Now, That's Extreme Volunteerism!
Many, many thanks to Kristine Griffith and other volunteers, who spent a week with the kids who live at LYDIA's Residential Treatment Center, redecorating the unit's living areas!

Kristine, a long-time friend of the ministry, is an interior designer and owner of Michael Edward Interiors. She coordinated the "extreme makeover" and worked with the other volunteers, many of whom are Accredited Staging Professionals. Together, they:
    Chose new bedding (pillows, sheets, duvets, throw pillows) with each child;

    • Installed new window valances;
    • Helped the children make a trinket box and a piece of art featuring scripture;
    • And created functional artwork, such as chalkboards and magnetic boards.

This project was a wonderful opportunity for the kids to express their own creativity and feel very special and loved. Thank you, Kristine and friends!

We need your help with the 2008 Benefit Gala
The Gala is coming! And you can be part of it when you serve as a table host or event sponsor, or contribute items to the always popular silent auction. Volunteers are needed for the event itself, too. The banquet will take place on Monday, Dec. 1 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. We expect attendance to be our highest ever, as we welcome well-known pastor and author Crawford Lorrits as our Featured Speaker!

To learn more, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by  or call (773) 653-2249.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
¡LYDIA está expandiendo sus servicios a las comunidades que hablan español!

Those of you who know Spanish already understand what I am trying to communicate: LYDIA is expanding its services to the Spanish-speaking community!

In fact, LYDIA has been serving Spanish speakers for many years. But now, we’ve added Héctor E. Cólon to the Safe Families staff to better meet the needs of the community. Héctor, who moved to Chicago from Puerto Rico with his wife and son last summer, has a great heart to serve God and people and does his work with enthusiasm and energy. He also has personal experience in giving and receiving hospitality, hallmarks of the Safe Families program. The need for Safe Families within the Spanish-speaking community is so great that we anticipate it will be a challenge to meet client demand.

Meanwhile, Safe Families’ expansion into Indianapolis continues — staff members have been hired, churches are getting on board and volunteer families are signing up. It is exciting to see God continue to open doors for Safe Families and provide financially for this program’s expansion through ministry partners like you!

By now, many of you have already received your economic stimulus check from the government. As you think about how to spend this money, I hope you’ll consider using some, most or even all of it to make a gift to LYDIA. This is both excellent stewardship and a worthy investment in the lives of the people we serve. Your generosity will make an impact in the lives of children and families, and you will not regret it!

Q&A with Héctor E. Cólon, Spanish Specialist for Safe Families
Why is Safe Families reaching out to the Spanish-speaking community?
These families need support, just as English-speaking families do. Many of them speak English well, but Spanish is their heart language, the one they feel most comfortable using, especially when dealing with a crisis situation. We need more Spanish-speaking volunteer families to meet this need.

Are you able to serve families now, even without enough volunteers?
God is using the local church to do this. For instance, a couple came to us for help and we were only able to find an English-speaking volunteer family to take their child in. But they agreed to attend Moody Church, where members of the Spanish Ministry have connected with them on a personal level. Now this couple is really growing in the Lord.

How are you working to expand the ministry’s reach to Spanish speakers?
Recruiting volunteers is very important, so I am working with local churches in the Spanish-speaking community to help them understand how Safe Families can be part of the outreach they are already doing. I am also translating some of our materials into the Spanish language.

How did you come to work at LYDIA?
I was a business owner in Puerto Rico for many years, but through prayer I felt God was calling me and my wife, Tamara, to something different. I began to get more involved with youth, parenting classes and marriage counseling. Eventually we decided to close our businesses and move to Chicago, with the blessing of our church elders. The first church I visited in Chicago was Moody Church, which has become a great blessing to my family. The congregation and staff have provided us with love and encouragement, as well as furniture and even a car. Through the church, I learned about LYDIA’s interest in expanding its ministry to Spanish speakers.

God led me here, although I never saw myself doing something like this. I have had opportunities to share God’s word with families, and lives are being changed. One couple is working to save their marriage and their family; another woman has asked to be discipled so she can grow in Christ. It is exciting.

    From Worst-Case to Best-Case Scenario
God has a way of turning worst-case scenarios into stories of grace and redemption. This is certainly true for Rosa and her children, whose lives are being transformed through an encounter with Safe Families.

Rosa’s husband was a violent man who abandoned his family after physically abusing her. While his departure provided physical relief, it also caused turmoil because Rosa was financially and emotionally incapable of providing for her children, ages 11 and 2. Her extended family offered to take the children back to Mexico, but instead she turned to Safe Families for help.

During their first meeting, Héctor E. Cólon spoke with Rosa about many things — her difficult circumstances, her children’s needs and, most importantly, her relationship with Jesus Christ. That day, Rosa asked Jesus to forgive her sins and trusted Him as her Savior. Her new life had begun.

Héctor was able to place Rosa’s children with Safe Families volunteer Elida, a single mother who cares for four children. Now Rosa could concentrate on finding work and a place to live. Within the week, she was able to bring her children, Bryan and Rosa, to the shelter with her.

Rosa began attending Moody Church with her children. Their story has motivated others at Moody to volunteer with Safe Families, and caused people to marvel at how God cares for people in their time of need.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Parents get excited about their baby’s firsts: first smile, first word, first steps and, my personal favorite: first solid night’s sleep. At LYDIA, we get excited about firsts, too. I’d like to share a few recent ones with you.

    • First time the Safe Families program placed 100 children in a three-month period;
    • First Healthy Families client to graduate from college;
    • And first steps toward an after-school program at LYDIA Learn and Care Preschool.
Perhaps the most exciting firsts, though, were experienced by the children who live in our Residential Treatment Center. In late March, they participated in a three-day camp at Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva, Wis., where highlights included horseback riding, ropes courses, campfires and archery. For some, it was the first time they had ever been out of the city. One young man ate his first s’more! What a great opportunity for these kids to enjoy God’s creation and have fun together with the LYDIA staff. This summer, they’ll be experiencing another first when they attend summer camp at Covenant Harbor.

It’s your support of LYDIA that helps make firsts like these possible. Thank you!

Helping Kids to RUN, not Walk!
“. . . let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

LYDIA volunteers Dan and Kim Michelson wanted to help those who live in LYDIA’s Residential Treatment Center run, not walk, through life. So last fall they launched Project RUN, a unique fundraising effort to pay for enrichment opportunities for LYDIA kids.

The Michelsons have already raised $14,000 through Project RUN, by simply asking friends and family to sponsor Dan’s participation in the New York City Marathon in 2007. That money was used to underwrite the cost of LYDIA’s Residential Treatment Center kids attending camp at Covenant Harbor in March (see above). You can contribute toward future projects by making a donation using LYDIA’s secured web site and selecting “Project RUN” from a drop down menu on the giving page. To do so, click here.

As the Michelson’s experience demonstrates, you don’t have to be a fundraising guru to support LYDIA in a special way. The key ingredients are enthusiasm and a worthy goal. Here’s one now, from Mandy Ross, Director of LYDIA Urban Academy: “I would love to establish a budget to provide transportation for monthly field trips,” she explains. “With 22 students, we have to rent a bus to get everyone there, and that costs about $250. Field trips can really enhance students’ educational experience, but lack of transportation is a real obstacle – we haven’t gone on any field trips for four months!”

To learn more about Project RUN or brainstorm about ways to raise money for the Urban Academy or another LYDIA program, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by or call (773) 736-1447, ext. 249.

19th Annual Charity Auction and Horse Sale at Salem Ranch
    Saturday, April 12

Come one, come all to the Salem Ranch Charity Auction and Horse Sale on Saturday April 12! This fun family day at Salem Ranch in Flanagan, Ill. (90 miles south of Chicago) begins at 8:30 a.m. with a bake sale and charity auction, followed by the horse sale at 1 p.m. Other festivities include a hog roast and low-cost family-style lunch—even inflatable carnival attractions for kids! All proceeds will benefit the ministry of Salem Ranch, a Christian boarding school affiliated with LYDIA that helps troubled boys address all of the important aspects of their lives so they can return home to their families. Additional information is available at www.salemranch.com or by calling (815) 796-4561.

Finding a Way Home Through Safe Families
Most couples with four young children feel they have their hands full, and rightly so. But Jason and Alison Morris, whose four daughters are all under 10 years old, signed up as Safe Families volunteers anyway. Their first assignment was to take in Avanna and Kia, two-year-old twin sisters whose mother, Keisha, was dealing with homelessness and a number of other personal problems.

Once the girls were settled in the Morris household, Keisha called almost daily to check in. Meanwhile, the Morris’ church family provided support in the form of meals, diapers, toys, car seats and more. After Keisha secured an apartment, Alison put the word out for additional help, and churches that didn’t even know her family personally started donating food, furniture, clothes, kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies.

After about two months, Keisha was ready to bring her children home. When she and Allison met for the first time, there were hugs and tears and a sense that the two families had formed a lifelong bond. Says Jason, “Together with our four daughters we have discovered such a simple way to make an incredible difference in the life of a child who just needs love . . . and we have only just begun.”

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
People who volunteer with LYDIA say that the hours they spend interacting with our kids, or serving as a Safe Family, or sharing the ministry with their church are incredibly rewarding. Their contribution of time and talent benefits the ministry immeasurably.

As LYDIA continues to grow, we need more volunteers than ever. Would you consider being part of what God is doing at LYDIA through volunteering your time in one of the following areas?

    • Serving as a Safe Families volunteer
    • Hosting group activities for kids in the Residential Treatment Center (perfect for small groups or church families)
    • Serving as a church liaison
    • Helping plan our Benefit Gala in December

This is a great opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of those in need! To learn more, please contact Erica Postma by or call (773) 736-1447, ext. 249.

Lastly, did you know that Safe Families was featured on Chicago’s ABC7 News in January? Reporter Harry Porterfield featured Safe Families as part of his "Someone You Should Know" segment. To watch the clip, click here.

    Changing Lives Through Employment
What a difference a year makes. Last spring, Katherine Santos was skipping school to get high with her friends. Today, she is excelling academically at LYDIA Urban Academy (LUA) and working part-time at a real estate office downtown!

Katherine’s job is made possible through a new work-study program at LUA, and it’s motivating her to work toward a career. “I don’t even think about using drugs and alcohol anymore, because that will get in the way of my goals,” she says. “Now I want to go to college and become a first- or second-grade teacher.”

The work-study program is designed to help students just like Katherine gain valuable work experience and also contribute toward the cost of their tuition. We currently have only three placements in Chicago and would like to establish 20 more. Do you, or someone you know, have an entry-level position that could be filled by a LYDIA student? LUA prepares students for employment through a course that emphasizes a strong work ethic and explains the expectations of the business world.

This could be a great opportunity to benefit your company and invest in the life of a student. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Gina Olsen by or call (773) 736-1447, ext. 311.

    Safe Families Continues to Grow
Many thanks to Harvest Bible Chapel, which recently highlighted LYDIA’s Safe Families ministry during services at all four of its campuses! The church leadership has set a goal of recruiting 100 volunteer families, and we are grateful for their partnership.

Safe Families provides parents and children with a safety net of support in the midst of personal crises such as illness and domestic violence. Our more than 270 volunteer families simply take in the children, without any financial compensation, for as long as is needed. That sometimes means just a few days, although some placements last up to a year.

This month, thanks in large part to your financial support, we are launching the ministry in Rockford and Indianapolis. Additional volunteer families are needed to help us meet the demand in these communities and in Chicago. For more information and to learn about training, please  or call (773) 736-1447. To support the ministry financially through our secured, online site, click here. Thank you!

    Salem Ranch Horse Auction
Salem Ranch invites you and your family to its Annual Horse Auction on Saturday, April 12! The day’s events include a horse auction featuring Arabians and other breeds, a live auction with hundreds of items, a bake sale, picnic lunch and many other family-oriented activities. All proceeds will benefit Salem Ranch, a boarding school that helps troubled boys through teaching, counseling, Bible study, an equestrian program and vocational training.

Your help is needed to make this event a success! If you have items to donate to the auction, are available to serve as a volunteer or would like to become a financial sponsor, please contact Jo Simmons at (815) 796-4561, ext. 121. Salem Ranch is located in Flanagan, Ill., 30 miles north of Bloomington/Normal and 90 miles south of Chicago.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Thanksgiving 2007 may be a distant memory, but it’s never too late to express our gratitude to people like you who help keep LYDIA’s ministry to children and families strong.

Your generosity this year has made a difference in the lives of many people who depend on LYDIA. Kim, a Chinese graduate student comes to mind. When she became pregnant last year, her boyfriend pressured her to have an abortion. She came to Safe Families for help, and there a caseworker was able to find volunteers to care for her baby while Kim earned enough money for her own apartment. Those volunteers have since become baby Peter’s godparents, and are providing much needed spiritual and emotional support.

Then there is Duane, who came to live at our Residential Treatment Center in 2004 after his mother abandoned him for a new marriage. Understandably, Duane was angry and very lonely, and he expressed a desperate desire to be placed with family members. But there were none to be found. He and a staff member prayed about the situation and, before too long, a paternal aunt appeared and asked to foster him. Duane was overjoyed, and as he left Residential to be with his aunt, he wept saying, “This was the only home I’ve ever had, the only family I’ve ever known. I have found a place here at LYDIA where I know I’m loved.”

These are just two examples of the many lives you have impacted through your generosity this year. I hope you know how much we appreciate your partnership with LYDIA. May you and your family enjoy a blessed Christmas as you celebrate the birth of Jesus!

Gala Inspires, Raises Needed Funds for LYDIA
The 2007 Gala Benefit will be remembered as an evening of inspiration and generosity, an evening when more than 900 people came together to show their support for LYDIA’s ministry of compassion. (Picture: Josh McDowell inspired guests to invest in relationships with the children in their lives, especially those without a loving father.)

The Silent Auction table was a hub of activity as guests bid on 126 items that included Bears tickets, a sailboat cruise on Lake Michigan, interior design services and much more. The LYDIA Divine Inspiration Dance Team lived up to its name, drawing our hearts and minds to worship God. And featured speaker Josh McDowell encouraged guests as only Josh can, urging all of us to serve children who do not have loving fathers. The ballroom was filled with the sounds of Christmas as Emcee Michelle McKinney Hammond closed the evening by leading guests in the traditional singing of “Silent Night.”

Generous gifts allowed LYDIA to far exceed its matching gift of $75,000 and donations are still coming in. Many thanks to the Event Sponsors, Table Hosts, Silent Auction donors, volunteers and staff members whose hard work and dedication made this Gala one of our most successful ever!

Time is Right for Year-End Gifts
Your generous support can help LYDIA end the year strong and start 2008 on solid financial footing. Here are some examples of how your gifts to LYDIA make a tangible difference in the lives of our clients:
    • $5,000 provides one year of tuition for a student at LYDIA Urban Academy;
    • $3,000 pays for a mother and her children to participate for one year in our Healthy Families program;
    • $1,200 covers the cost for LYDIA to serve one family through Safe Families;
    • And $500 provides 10 counseling sessions for a family in need.

If interested in monthly giving, please contact Judy Devlin, Development Associate, by or call (773) 736-1447, ext. 223.

Gifts of appreciated assets and those made as part of your estate plan are also most welcome. To learn more, please contact Nancy Good, Development Director, by or call (773) 736-1447.

    Choices, Consequences & Compassion
Olga came to Chicago from Slovakia two years ago as part of a church choir performing in a Slovakian Church. To everyone’s surprise, she met a man whom she almost immediately married. After the birth of their first child, Olga’s husband became physically abusive towards her, and he then left her for another woman. With three months to go until the birth of her second child, Olga came to LYDIA seeking assistance. In broken English, she struggled to convey her anxieties about separating from her children and allowing them to be cared for by “strangers.” Olga was anxious about the future of her young family.

A few months later, Olga’s son, Alexej, was born, and Olga agreed to place him and his one-year-old sister, Alexandra, in the home of Safe Families volunteers. Olga is currently staying with her lone relative in the area, an elderly cousin, and is seeking full-time employment so that she can afford her own apartment. Alexej recently returned to live with Olga, while Alexandra is remaining in the Safe Families home until the situation can become more stable.

In difficult situations like these, many women rely on a supportive safety net of family and friends. But when that isn’t possible, Safe Families is honored and blessed to serve as that safety net, seeing men, women and children through in times of crisis. Thank you for your role in helping make that possible!

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
A recent reunion at LYDIA can only be described as pure joy, thanks to the 140 guests who came to reminisce, laugh and talk about how LYDIA has touched their lives over the years. The evening brought together past residents, volunteers and staff members, whose experiences afforded a special glimpse of how God has used LYDIA to serve children and families for more than 90 years.

One of our most honored guests was Agnes Benjamin, age 92, who came to live at LYDIA with her sister in 1918. The Benjamin sisters were among the first orphans to be cared for at LYDIA, and Agnes told us that they had many precious memories of their time here. We were also joined by Bob and Joanie Swenson, who represented three generations of service to LYDIA — Bob and his mother served on the board, and his grandmother was one of LYDIA’s founding members. Guests really enjoyed hearing from two former residents, Charlene Davis and Luke Williamson, who shared how LYDIA had enriched their lives and set them on a different path.

This event was such an encouragement, because it reminded all of us about LYDIA’s rich heritage and its impact on lives throughout many generations. The ministry has changed significantly from its early days as an orphanage, but its impact continues to be felt. Here’s what one 13-year-old shared with us as he prepared to leave our Residential Unit to live with a relative: “This was the only home I’ve ever had, the only family I’ve ever known. I have found a place here at LYDIA where I know I’m loved.”

This child’s experience at LYDIA will affect him for the rest of his life — and not just him, but his wife and children, and even their children. Thank you for partnering with us today as we make an impact on the future. God is faithful, and we are grateful for the many ways He provides for LYDIA through people like you!

The response to this reunion was so positive that LYDIA has decided to create an “Alumni Association” for past residents, volunteers and staff. If you are interested in being part of this process, or joining the group once it is up and running, please contact Judy Devlin, Development Associate, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 223.

Once a month can make an impact!
Can volunteering one afternoon a month really make a difference in children's lives? Heide Blair thinks so. Here, she tells about her experience with the kids of LYDIA.

I became acquainted with LYDIA years ago when I was cooking at a church camp that sponsored kids from the Residential Unit for a week in the summer. About five years ago, something brought LYDIA to mind again, and I decided to call and see how I could help out. Christmas was coming, and after talking to a staff member at LYDIA, I decided to include kids from the Residential Unit in a Project Angel Tree event that our church (Lakeland Evangelical Free in Gurnee, IL) was sponsoring. A number of people signed up for a specific child and bought Christmas presents for them. Pretty soon, we organized a group of volunteers that started going to visit LYDIA one Sunday afternoon a month.

About 20 to 25 adults and children from our church participate each time, providing planned activities and supper for the kids. For the younger ones we prepare a craft to work on with them, while the older boys might play basketball or catch with my husband and other guys. We love bringing food that the kids might not ordinarily get at LYDIA — the favorite seems to be "Tacos-in-a-Bag" (not as messy as it sounds). My mom comes every month and bakes a dessert. (Her chocolate cake with caramel topping being the most popular.)

When we first started coming, we would often leave feeling pretty overwhelmed, knowing that these kids have experienced a lot of heartache and wondering how we could possibly have any impact. It took some time to begin to earn their trust, but we are now developing relationships with these kids, and we trust that God will in fact use these small connections to make a difference in their lives.

These kids have been rejected over and over again, but our group accepts them and loves them and we keep coming back. We are trying to demonstrate Christ's love to each and every one of them, working to help them see how special they are to us and, more importantly, to God. Each month I leave LYDIA feeling like we received more of a blessing than the children did. It is a privilege to serve God's children, and He seems to return the blessing tenfold!

We need your help with the 2007 Benefit Gala!
The Gala is coming! And you can be part of it when you serve as a table host or event sponsor, or contribute items to the always popular silent auction. Volunteers are needed for the event itself, too. The banquet will take place on Monday, Dec. 3 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. We expect attendance to be our highest ever, as we welcome well-known author Josh McDowell as our Featured Speaker!

To learn more, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 249.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
School begins this month at LYDIA Urban Academy (LUA), and we are looking forward to another great year of helping at-risk students excel academically, emotionally and spiritually. This year, for the first time, we’ll also be helping them finance part of their education through meaningful employment, thanks to our new Work-Study Program.

During the school year, students will work eight hours per week at local businesses in entry-level positions. Instead of receiving a check, they will assign their earnings to LUA to pay for 50% of the cost of their tuition. Parents will be asked to pay 30%, and LYDIA will raise the remaining 20% through fundraising. This will relieve the burden on student families, many of whom struggle to get by, and help the school meet its financial obligations. It also will expose students to different career opportunities and help them develop marketable skills.

LUA will prepare students for employment through a course that emphasizes a strong work ethic and explains the expectations of the business world. We anticipate that students will do well in positions that involve skills such as basic data entry, answering phones, filing, typing and faxing, among others.

Would you or someone you know be interested in hiring an Urban Academy student as part of this program? Our staff is working hard to secure 20 job placements by September 1 (we’re almost halfway there!) To learn more, please contact me at or at (773) 736-1447. Together, we can make a significant impact in the lives of at-risk youth!

From the Brink of Expulsion to Model Student
We first met Jonathan two years ago, when he enrolled at LYDIA Urban Academy. At that time, he was a ball of nervous energy, prone to angry outbursts and a distraction in all of his classes. Director Mandy Ross was frequently at her wits’ end with Jonathan and considering expulsion. But the other teachers, who had known Jonathan a little longer, always convinced Mandy to give him another chance.

The next school year, Jonathan dedicated himself to becoming a model student. He started to learn about appropriate versus inappropriate behavior, and corrected himself after his outbursts. He even took a job at Target to help with family expenses.

Jonathan received his diploma in June, making him the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He plans to attend Wright College this fall. Mandy tells us that she and Jonathan developed a much stronger relationship this past year, a surprise to both of them. Mandy plans to have him return to LUA as a guest speaker.

    Enriching Lives . . . in a Cave?
LUA teacher Travis Satterlee gave several students a real-life earth sciences lesson last spring when he took them to Illinois Caverns in Waterloo. Joined by two friends who are certified with the National Cave Rescue Commission, the group’s experience featured pitch-black moments underground, a swim through chest-high water, narrow passageways and more. Here’s what two of the students had to say:

“The best thing on the trip was when we were in the cave getting wet and crawling through holes and just exploring. I had a good time, Travis. Thanks.” — Dean

“I like the fact that this was a new experience for me. Being raised in the city left me unprepared for some of the events happening in the cave, like crawling through cracks in the rocks.” — Oscar

Enrichment adventures like this one are unusual for LUA students, but they are very important to the learning process. We are exploring a few different opportunities for this year’s LUA students, such a visit to our state capital, a trip to Shedd Aquarium and a day at Notebaert Nature Museum.

School Supplies, Sodium Chloride and Safety Goggles . . . Oh My!
Travis Satterlee loves teaching Earth Sciences, but his LUA classroom lacks many of the necessary supplies for hands-on learning. Last year, LYDIA’s kitchen staff donated some items for various scientific experiments, but we’d like to do more for this dedicated teacher and his students. Travis’s “wish list” of almost 50 items ranges from notebooks and folders to chemicals and rubber tubing (click here to view list). If you would like to donate $50, $100 or even more toward the purchase of these items, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, by  or call (773) 736-1447, ext. 249. Thank you!

We need your help with the 2007 Benefit Gala!
Table hosts, event sponsors and other volunteers are needed for LYDIA’s 2007 Benefit Gala, to be held December 3 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. The event could be our largest ever, as we welcome well-known evangelist and author Josh McDowell as our Featured Speaker!

    MonMondayJunJune11th2007 June 2007
A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Many ministries, churches and businesses keep a relaxed pace during the summer months, but something tells me that won’t be the case here at LYDIA! Serving children and families is a full-time, year-round job for us, and client needs certainly don’t end with the school year.

A few very encouraging developments are helping us brave the busy months ahead with full confidence in God’s provision and blessing. Let’s begin with the LYDIA Urban Academy (LUA), our alternative high school, which held its 2007 graduation on June 7. Four students received their diplomas that day; of those, some had never tasted academic success until coming to LUA, and one was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. It was an exciting time of celebrating with parents, siblings, friends and staff.

Next year’s LUA students can take advantage of a work-study opportunity we’re developing with local employers. Students who participate will gain valuable work experience and earn money to help cover the cost of tuition, something their family is often unable to do for them. Do you or someone you know have a job opening that a hard-working high school student could fill? If so, please let me know.

Speaking of hard working, that’s the only adjective to use when describing LYDIA’s Development Department staff. In recent weeks, they have secured generous grants from several foundations, many of them designated for our Safe Families program. Also, we recently learned that LUA-Rockford has received a highly competitive, three-year grant from the United Way of Rock River Valley.

The Development Department is now focusing its efforts on meeting our budgeted needs by June 30, the end of our fiscal year. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, the goal is in sight: we have $150,000 to go. Any help you can provide in the next few weeks would be most appreciated. You can even donate online through secure electronic transfer. To learn more, click here.

We know that when God blesses LYDIA as He has been in the last few months, He’s really blessing the children and families we serve. Thank you for being part of it!

Future Looks Bright for Recent LUA Grad
LYDIA Urban Academy’s June 7 graduation ceremony featured a special speaker – Julee, whose academic success and maturity are an inspiration to teachers and students alike. She was this year’s class valedictorian.

Julee enrolled at the Academy because she did not want to attend the public school in her district due to gang problems and an overall difficult atmosphere. LUA appealed to her because of its Christian emphasis and small class size.

From the beginning, Julee proved herself to be a motivated student and hard worker. She lives at home with her parents but has a much stronger relationship with her mother due to the fact that her father is an alcoholic and not available as a parent figure. Julee helps her mother care for her younger brother, who has Down syndrome, and also works part time at Jewel to contribute to her tuition payments ($100 a month).

What has been most encouraging about Julee’s time here is her spiritual growth. She is an eager seeker and has even attended a church retreat with two Academy teachers. It will be exciting to see God work in Julee’s life! She is interested in forensic science and plans to attend Wright College in the fall. LUA Director Mandy Ross is hoping Julee will minor in education and come back to work at the Academy (maybe even direct it)!

Get involved with the 2007 Benefit Gala!

“Josh’s commitment to youth and to meeting the spiritual and physical needs of underprivileged people is close to the heart of LYDIA and its supporters,” says Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director of LYDIA. “His presentation at our Benefit Gala will engage and energize all of us as we consider our own role in caring for children and families right here in Chicago.”

Event sponsors, table hosts and silent auction items are needed as we begin planning the details of our 2007 Benefit Gala. To learn more, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 249.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Child abuse and neglect usually happen behind closed doors, but with so many kids at risk, it’s everybody’s business. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and I want to take the opportunity to tell you about three LYDIA programs that help address this important issue in our community.

The first is Safe Families, which on April 2 was honored by Prevent Child Abuse Illinois and DCFS as one of three recipients of the Program of Excellence Award. Safe Families is indeed gaining notoriety among child welfare organizations in the state and around the country, because it allows parents to deal with problems (unemployment, drug abuse, etc.) while their children are being cared for by a loving Christian family.

Healthy Families, located in the Austin Community of Chicago, provides free home visits to educate women about prenatal and child care, beginning when mom is pregnant and continuing through the child’s fifth year. Last year, caseworkers made approximately 1,500 home visits to 45 low-income women, and 34 women took advantage of our Doula Program.

And then there is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) offered through LYDIA Counseling Center in Chicago. This positive, intensive program is for children ages 2-8 who are experiencing chronic behavioral problems at school and home. Therapists observe parents interacting with their child, then provide feedback and coaching to improve the relationship and the child’s response to discipline. In many cases, PCIT achieves striking results.

When you support LYDIA programs like these with your financial gifts and prayers, you are really investing in people who might otherwise sink into a cycle of abuse and neglect. Thank you for being part of what God is doing at LYDIA!

A Safety Net in Times of Crisis
By Tom Maluga, Director of Safe Families

Families — especially those in urban areas — are becoming more and more fractured, leaving many people without the safety net of support they need in difficult circumstances. Safe Families volunteers provide that safety net, stepping in to care for children when parents are unable or unwilling to do it themselves.

Such was the case for baby “Kristen,” whose mother, “Keilah,” was facing a high-pressure situation of her own. Single and barely out of her teens, she already had one child when Kristen was born. Also, she lacked the support of parents—particularly her mother, who had a long history of substance abuse and incarceration.

Keilah and her children moved in with Keilah’s stepfather, who urged her to consider giving Kristen up for adoption. The adoption counselor — sensing that Keilah desperately wanted to keep Kristen — referred her to Safe Families.

Kristen is now in the care of Safe Families volunteers Jeff and Kathy Karlin, who have developed a relationship of spiritual encouragement with Keilah as she works to create a stable home environment for her children. It’s an arrangement that allows her the time and space she needs to grow and mature, and gives the Karlins the opportunity to demonstrate God’s love to both mother and baby in a tangible way.

Safe Families volunteers are needed to keep pace with demand for this high-impact program. To learn more, please call (773) 736-1447 or e-mail .

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
At LYDIA, we are continually seeking ways to extend our reach close to home and around the country. For instance, this year we are working with churches in Georgia to launch Safe Families in that state, and hope to do the same in Indiana and possibly New Jersey. We are also expanding Virtuous Reality, our Abstinence Education Program, thanks in part to a large five-year grant from the Community-Based Abstinence Education Project.

These and other initiatives take time, money, prayer and perseverance. We appreciate your partnership in all of these areas! If God is leading you to become even more invested in LYDIA, I hope you’ll consider making a monthly donation to the ministry. Funds can be automatically withdrawn from your checking account when you sign up via our website at www.lydiahome.org/monthlydonations.

Another giving opportunity exists for those who want to help children in our Residential Unit attend Covenant Harbor, a Christian camp in Lake Geneva, Wis., during spring break. This getaway was a wonderful experience for the 41 residents, ages 7-17, who attended last year. They participated in activities that included a high- and low-ropes course, archery, arts and crafts, hikes and more. On the last night, 17 responded to an altar call and accepted Christ as their Savior.

To provide a $300 scholarship for this life-changing experience, please contact Kristin Etter, Development Associate, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 223. Thank you!

Josh McDowell to Serve as Gala 2007 Speaker
We are pleased to announce that well-known evangelist and author Josh McDowell will serve as Featured Speaker at LYDIA’s 2007 Benefit Gala! We hope you’ll plan to attend this special event, to be held December 3 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill.

Event sponsors, table hosts and other volunteers are needed! To learn more, please contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 249. To read about Josh’s background and ministry, please visit www.lydiahome.org/Gala2007.

    Now, That’s Dedication!
Would you shave your head bald to reward struggling high school students for their efforts? LYDIA Urban Academy teacher Travis Satterlee did, and it worked!

The story began last spring when Travis saw that three of his students were beginning to give up in Earth Science. “I knew that with the proper motivation and some after-school help, they could succeed,” Travis says. “So I told them, ‘you guys get a B on your Earth Science final, and I’ll let you shave my head.’”

The boys studied hard, and all three received A’s! “When I announced their grades, their faces lit up the room,” Travis says. “I had never seen them so happy.”

Within minutes, Travis — true to his word — pulled out clippers from his desk drawer and allowed the boys to shave him bald. “I think the experience helped them see that they can do something they never thought possible,” Travis says. “That belief will take them a long way in life.”

For the Wrights, Volunteering is a Family Affair
By Katy Wright, Safe Families Volunteer
My family began volunteering with Safe Families about three years ago. The first children we took in were sisters, ages two and four. Their mom, Donna, had been leaving them at night to party, and she was also dealing with depression and a lot of anger about the abuse in her past. She needed time and space to go through intensive therapy, so her girls lived with us for four months.

During that time, Donna visited our home and even stayed for weekends to spend time with her kids. She saw how we disciplined our own children — who were then ages 10 through 15 — and how we respect each other. It gave her a vision of something different for her family.

Donna became a Christian before they returned to their lives in Chicago, and she’s now involved with a Home Group Bible Study, meeting regularly with a mentor, and ministering to the youth in her church. Donna has become a devoted mother, too.

I think what amazes us most about our involvement with Safe Families is how much the experience has blessed us as a family. Taking in at-risk kids has pulled us out of our comfort zone and forced us to stick together through the challenges. My kids have grown spiritually, and we have all been tremendously blessed.

    FriFridayDecDecember15th2006 December 2006
A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
‘Tis the season to be jolly, overeat and sift through year-end appeals from charitable organizations. As December 31 draws near, you’ll be making a lot of decisions about giving, and we hope you’ll put LYDIA at the top of your list.

If you attended our Annual Benefit Gala earlier this month, you heard Dr. Joe Stowell suggest that perhaps Jesus’ family used the wise men’s gifts to provide for their needs during their flight to Egypt. He likened this to the concept that all of us are to give of our riches in order to “rescue” others.

When you give to LYDIA, your gift is really part of a greater rescue operation that we carry out every day of the week, every week of the year. So many opportunities lie ahead for LYDIA to help children and families! Next year we will be working to expand Safe Families in Chicago and introduce it in other states, such as Georgia and possibly Indiana and New Jersey. Safe Families is such a wonderful program, because it allows parents to address their challenges (such as drug abuse and poverty) while their children are in the care of loving volunteers. These are families who might otherwise by separated for months or years because of the child welfare system’s red tape.

We are also hoping to increase enrollment at our alternative high school, LYDIA Urban Academy, on all three campuses (Chicago, Rockford, Quad Cities). LUA gives teens the tools they need to graduate from high school, helping them work toward academic and vocational success. Taking in more students means we’ll need more supplies and additional teachers; your support can help make that happen. We’re also looking forward to implementing a more comprehensive abstinence education program at Chicago middle schools and high schools in 2007, which will help students make a commitment to purity, an important part of reaching their goals.

I hope you will give generously to LYDIA today so that we can end the year strong and start 2007 on solid financial footing. Gifts are tax deductible and can be made online through our secure web site at www.lydiahome.org/donate or by mail at 4300 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 60641.

To donate a gift of appreciated assets, please contact Kristin Etter, Development Associate, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 223. If you would like to learn about leaving a legacy to LYDIA by including the ministry in your estate plan, please contact Nancy Good, Development Director, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 252.

I hope you know how much we appreciate your partnership with LYDIA. May you and your family enjoy a blessed Christmas as you celebrate the birth of our Savior.

    Can You Spare a Ride?
LYDIA is in need of a reliable, used vehicle to transport children who live in our Residential Services Unit. If interested, contact Kristin Etter, Development Associate, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 223.

    Annual Benefit Gala a Success
Our thanks to the nearly 900 guests who attended LYDIA’s 90th Anniversary Benefit Gala on December 4 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The event was a real celebration of God’s faithfulness, as we heard compelling stories from clients, were challenged by Dr. Joe Stowell’s message and received an opportunity to partner with LYDIA financially.

From all accounts, this Gala was our most successful ever in terms of gifts received and number of guests. As the staff continues to process gifts and pledges, it’s becoming clear that donors gave enthusiastically — the running total brings us beyond our $100,000 matching grant amount, although somewhat short of our $300,000 goal.

If you would like to make a gift toward our Banquet total, please do so by visiting our secure web site at www.lydiahome.org/donate or by sending a check to 4300 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 60641. Questions? Contact Erica Postma, Associate Director of Development, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 249. Thank you!

Why We Volunteer With Safe Families
by Chad Kimball (picture below: LYDIA staff member helping a child into her car seat)
My wife and I heard about LYDIA through our church, and the Safe Families ministry gripped my heart. Holly and I knew right away that we should volunteer. We feel called to minister to families, so this seemed like a perfect fit.

Our first placement was with a baby named Africa, whose mother, Samantha, was in a really bad situation. She was a teenager and felt like she couldn’t take the baby back to her mom’s apartment, since her mom and brother were crackheads and drug dealers. Samantha figured she’d have to put the baby up for adoption, but an adoption counselor referred her to Safe Families, and Safe Families called us.

We picked up Africa at the hospital and took care of her while Samantha looked for housing and employment. She came by a few times to see the baby and talk, and was really blown away by what we were doing for her. Within a week, she was able to find a place to live and had enrolled in a work/study program at a local trade school. It was hard for us, and especially for Holly, to say goodbye to Africa, but we were really glad to be part of God’s plan for this little family.

The experience cemented our desire to help children and families through LYDIA. A few months earlier, we had taken in a woman and her family from our church while she was going through a tough time. That was a lot more challenging, because she counted on us for everything — help finding a job and an apartment, babysitting, and a lot more. But with Safe Families, we don’t have to do everything— we can just give what we have: love, a home, stability, encouragement and prayer. Safe Families does the rest.

Being a Safe Families volunteer isn’t hard. LYDIA makes it very safe, and the staff is really supportive. We are completely hooked.

To volunteer with Safe Families or learn more, please call (773) 736-1447 or e-mail (note: picture above is of LYDIA staff and a Safe Families child).

Tremaine: Rising Above Circumstances at the Urban Academy
So many LYDIA Urban Academy students seem to have the cards stacked against them. Their success at LUA is a testimony to the power of God and a tribute to our dedicated teachers.

Tremaine is a good example. The middle child of seven, he is being raised in Chicago by a single mother, Tasha, who receives no assistance from the children’s father. Also, Tasha battles health issues that affect her ability to work consistently; as a result, she has difficulty even making our minimum tuition payment of $75 a month. Despite these challenges, Tasha is determined that her children will succeed academically and grow up to become honorable Christians.

When Tremaine came to the Academy three years ago, he was almost unable to sit still or pay attention in class. Thanks to the Academy’s low teacher-to-student ratio, he is receiving the help he needs to respect rules and meet classroom expectations, as well as complete his academic work. As a result, Tremaine’s strengths – enthusiasm and natural curiosity, among others — are beginning to shine. It’s hard to tell who is more proud: Tremaine, his mom, or us!

    MonMondayOctOctober16th2006 October 2006
A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
When parents are going through tough times, it’s often their children who suffer most. A serious illness, drug abuse, even impossibly tight finances can lead to terrible problems for children, including physical abuse and neglect.

The great news is that YOU can make a difference is situations like these. How? As a Safe Families volunteer with LYDIA. Safe Families volunteers open their homes to children whose parents are unable to care for them, whether because of a short-term crisis, such as hospitalization, or a longer-term situation, such as drug abuse. Taking the kids out of the home setting often gives parents an opportunity to address the issues that led to their situation. The average length of stay is about six weeks, but can range from two days to a year.

My wife, Karen, and I have served as Safe Families volunteers since the program began in 2002, and I’ll tell you this: there’s nothing like it. To know that God is using you in the life of a child in need, to see that child respond to your love and care. . . it’s something everyone should experience. Not just once, but multiple times!

Safe Families volunteers include singles, married couples with children of any age and empty nesters, all of whom simply decided to make room in their hearts and homes for children in need. To learn about becoming a volunteer, please call (773) 736-1447 or email . You will be glad you did!

    Changing Lives Through Safe Families
Last year, Safe Families served 110 children in need, and stories such as Tina’s really illustrate what an impact this program is having in children’s lives.

Tina came to our Safe Families program last summer at a critical period in her young life. Her mother, who was a prostitute and drug addict, had left Tina alone much of the time, forcing this young girl to grow up much too fast. When Tina was 10, her mom died of AIDS, and Tina went to live with her stepfather, who sexually abused her. Then he died, and Tina moved in with her grandmother. But Tina’s rebelliousness made the situation impossible, so she moved once again, this time to live with her father in Milwaukee. But he was a drug addict, too, and mostly ignored her. So Tina returned to her grandmother’s, where she wasn’t really wanted.

We learned about Tina’s situation and approached her and her grandmother about enrolling Tina in LYDIA Safe Families. Tina, now 14, was placed with a single mother and her three children; she began attending a local school, and quickly became part of the family. This has been such a good fit that the mother is hoping to become Tina’s long-term guardian! It’s an especially happy ending because, unlike most Safe Families children, Tina doesn’t have a home to return to.

Would you like to be part of this exciting program — and make a real difference in the lives of other children in need? To learn more, please call (773) 736-1447 or email

“As we seek to serve God through LYDIA, we've found that our family is being blessed as well. To see the love and compassion of our own children as they welcome these children with open arms has brought laughter, joy and some challenges. It's worth the risk, and we would challenge people to consider being a Safe Family and impacting the life of a child in need.”
    - Rose and Jim Koopman , Safe Families Volunteers since 2005

We hope to raise $300,000, which will benefit LYDIA’s extensive programs for children and families. This year’s featured speaker is Joe Stowell, who serves as teaching pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Dr. Stowell also served as the seventh president of The Moody Bible Institute from 1987 to 2005.

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
School is right around the corner, and here at LYDIA we’re preparing for what could be our best year yet. I say that because of the incredible ways God is blessing our ministry to children. Even as we feel stretched to the limit of our emotions and financial resources, He continues to bring more and more children to us for spiritual, physical and emotional care. Thankfully, God’s resources are as infinite as His love for these kids. We’re counting on that!

We’re also counting on you. Your generosity is an integral part of our success in ministering to children, whether you are helping us pay for school supplies for our foster kids or funding a scholarship for one of the students at LYDIA Urban Academy. So much needs to be done for these kids, and there is so much we want to do. I’ve included a list of immediate needs for the fall, and I hope you’ll respond generously. God is changing lives through us and through you. Thank you for persevering with us!

    Virtuous Reality Wants You!
Virtuous Reality, LYDIA’s abstinence education program, shared the truth about abstinence with 2,500 students at 25 local schools last year. Here is what just a few eighth graders had to say about this program:

“I think every person in the world should be abstinent before marriage in order to reach their goals. Thank you for teaching me and my classmates.”
    — Caitlin

Some of the things I learned through this program have helped me set a course for my life by making me better informed. I think that by knowing my options I can make better choices. Thank you for making a difference.
    — Andrew

“The abstinent classes made me think about my future goals. I realized that waiting for someone you love and are going to marry is better then giving it up to someone you just think you love. It’s worth waiting for.”
    — Jose

With feedback like this, it’s no wonder our staff has big plans to expand Virtuous Reality. To do that, they need volunteers to serve as classroom educators! If you are a good communicator and enjoy working with youth, please contact Melody LaLuz, Abstinence Education Director, by email at or by phone at (773) 259-9187. Volunteers with office skills are also needed at Virtuous Reality’s 4839 West Irving Park Road location. Thank you!

A Message from Dr. David Anderson, Executive Director
Welcome to the first issue of LYDIA Today, the enewsletter for friends of LYDIA! You’ll receive this publication periodically to keep you informed about what’s going on here at LYDIA. I hope it gives you a glimpse of how God is using us to serve children and families, and provides a vision of how you might become even more involved with our ministry!

Right now, we’re thanking God for:

    • A very successful horse auction at Salem Ranch, which brought in more $70,000. Salem Ranch is our Christian boarding school for troubled boys, and enrollment is currently at 31, a number that exceeds our expectations.
    • Generous grants that were recently awarded to LYDIA from the Circle of Service Foundation, HSBC - North America, Polk Bros. Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation and W.P. & H.B. White Foundation.
    • Our foster care program, which is on target in its efforts to place children in permanent homes, either with an adoptive family or back with a biological parent.
    • The 32 families from the Evangelical Free Church of Naperville, Ill., who are interested in becoming Safe Families volunteers.

This month, we’re grieving the loss of a great friend, Ken Randall. Ken lived at LYDIA for many years as a child, and to show his appreciation for the impact LYDIA had on him, spent the rest of his life on our Board of Directors and as a sacrificial supporter. Ken recently went to be with the Lord, leaving behind an incredible heritage. Thanks, Ken.

    Please pray with us that:

    • Our abstinence education program will receive a significant federal contract this fall, allowing us to expand to more Chicago-area schools.
    • We will find a sufficient number of volunteer families to meet the growing demand for our Safe Families program.
    • We would find the right foster homes for the boys and girls who remain in our residential program simply because there are no families for them to live with.

Thanks for being part of God’s work here at LYDIA!

    Life Change at Camp
“God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars.” — Martin Luther

LYDIA’s Residential Treatment facility is a place where kids heal, but the process is always painful. A change of scenery can be medicine for the soul, as we discovered when LYDIA staff took all 41 residents (ages 7-17) to Covenant Harbor, a Christian camp in Lake Geneva, Wis., during spring break this year.

For three days, kids and staff participated in activities that included a high- and low-ropes course, archery, arts and crafts, hikes and more. Group therapy took place around a bonfire, as staff shared their own stories and taught on biblical themes. Slowly, barriers came down, and kids began to let go of their hurts and pray for their families. On the last night, 17 responded to an altar call and accepted Christ as their Savior.

The experience was so meaningful and life changing for these kids that we’d like to take them again at the end of the summer. But it’s expensive! If you are able to give toward our goal of raising $6,500, please contact Kristin Etter, Development Associate, at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 223. Thank you!

“We got to do a lot of cool stuff that we never did before.” — Shonda, 10

“The staff treated us extra special and gave us a lot of love.” — Anthony, 14

“Do I want to go back to Covenant Harbor? YES!!” — Chantale, 11

    The Local Community Connection
Local churches and organizations help spread the word about LYDIA, provide volunteers and contribute financially to the ministry. Would you help us by serving as a liaison to your church or organization? We’ll provide you with the materials you need to share LYDIA’s story, or we can arrange to have a representative from LYDIA speak to your church or group. If you can help, please contact Cindy Loacker, Director of Church and Community Relations, at (773) 736-1447, ext. 304 or

    What Your Gift Can Do
When you give to LYDIA, you are making a difference in the lives of children who have been hurt, abused, neglected and — in many cases — taken away from their parents. Your gift is really an investment in their future, and a demonstration of Christ’s love to those in need. Your generosity will make a difference today and for generations to come!

Each year we must raise about $1.2 million to help pay for LYDIA’s many services, including Residential Treatment for the 40-plus children who live at our facility in Chicago. Our fiscal year ends June 30, and we need to bring in $400,000 by that date to meet our budgeted needs. What part will you play in helping us end the year with all bills paid and start the new year strong? We are counting on your generosity!

Many giving options exist, and most provide attractive tax benefits. Please consider:

    • Donating cash, whether by mail, phone or our web site, www.lydiahome.org
    • Making a gift of appreciated stock or real estate;
    • Asking your employer to match your gift to LYDIA;
    • And/or including LYDIA in your estate plan, which allows you to leave a legacy to the children of LYDIA.

Questions? Please contact Nancy Good at or (773) 736-1447, ext. 256.
